ABOUT SKILL RATINGS
What are HomeCourt Skill Ratings?
“Skill Ratings,” developed in partnership with the NBA, is a scoring system to help you measure your work and improvement across a variety of core basketball skill areas while using HomeCourt.
Skill Ratings helps you assess your skill level, track your improvements, and set goals to strive for.
What criteria goes into skill ratings?
We designed Skill Ratings to be based on 4 criteria that reflect performing well in an actual game: accuracy, speed, consistency, and difficulty.
Put simply, the more accurate you are at executing challenging exercises at game speed over time, the higher your score will be.
How are ratings calculated?
They are calculated on a scale from 0 to 99, skill ratings factor in your speed, accuracy, and consistency, giving you a more well rounded view of your skills.
How are skill ratings benchmarked?
Our scores are benchmarked by answering a simple question: how would a skilled player at this position perform on this exercise across those 4 criteria?
For example, we believe JJ reddick or Joe Harris, two of the best 3 point shooters in the NBA, would be able to score a 90+ in the 3 point shooting category, meaning they would be able to complete difficult 3 point shooting drills with high accuracy, at a game speed, on a consistent basis. A similar logic applies across other core skills on HomeCourt where we can give you a Skill Rating.
What are the benefits of this system? How will it help the average player?
Skill Ratings help you measure your work and improvement across a variety of core skill areas while using HomeCourt. Skill Ratings helps you assess your skill level, track your improvements, and set goals to strive for.
Is everything I do on HomeCourt reflected in my Skill Ratings?
For the most part, yes. 2-player reaction drills do not contribute and at the moment dribble challenges don’t either. But all shooting activities have the same possibilities of contributing via streaks or best 50.
Can I benchmark my skill scores against my peers, “near me” like I can with Leaderboards?
There is no leaderboard for comparing Skill Scores yet, we are considering this for future releases.
What if I have a low score? Does that mean I’m not good? What does it mean?
Most likely it means you haven’t completed enough drills to fully flesh out your scores. As you continue to improve and beat your own records, you will see your score improve.
What if I am a young player that is not anywhere near high school/varsity level? Should I even care about this?
If you care about improving your skills, you should care about your Skill Ratings because they reflect your true skill level and track your improvements over time. If you want to play a higher level of basketball one day, mastering these skills is critical and have proven to be indispensable at more advanced levels of basketball.
Will my score ever go down? If not, how do I get feedback if my skills are in fact deteriorating? (lack of practice, my form is broken, time off, etc)
In the first version no, but we think it makes a lot of sense for skill scores to degrade over time if you do not continue to show performance to back it up.
